Findings from the UK reports in WP2

Our research has shown that Innovation support in the UK is provided through a very diverse range of mechanisms. NESTA (National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts) is a key player in the field of innovation in the UK and their main function is to generate innovation to address societal challenges such as reduced public services, an ageing population and an ever changing labour market. Innovate UK is the UK’s innovation agency. Their aim is to help grow the UK economy by supporting businesses, partnerships and research institutions. Our research has shown that all countries in the UK have variations within them in terms of levels of innovation activity and funding available. There is still a North/South divide in England and it seems this is also the case for Wales.

Looking again at the British Social Attitudes (BSA) survey we can see that there has been little change on what the public feel government should be spending money on. The priorities are still; health and education, crime prevention and defence. There have been slight changes in attitudes towards the vulnerable and less people feel strongly about benefit claimants; furthermore, it is felt that more money should be spent on supporting disabled people.
